On August 27, the title became the ECW World Heavyweight Championship when Douglas relinquished the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. ECW leaves the NWA and is renamed Extreme Championship Wrestling. Recognized as the start of the title's history by WWE.[1][5]

However, Awesome unexpectedly signed with World Championship Wrestling in 2000 while still being champion. As a result, Paul Heyman and Vince McMahon arranged for Tazz to return to ECW and defeat Awesome for title.[15]

Kane 1 March 30, 2008 Orlando, FL Won the title at WrestleMania XXIV. The title became Raw exclusive on 23 June 2008 when Kane was drafted to Raw. [27]
Mark Henry 1 June 29, 2008 Dallas, TX This was a Triple Threat match at Night of Champions, also involving The Big Show, thus making the title ECW exclusive once again.[28]
